Hi, my name is Ola, and I had the privilege of being part of the ESC Humanitarian Aid Project. This testimony is a reflection of my experiences during that time.
An International Collaboration for Local Impact
From September 1st to October 29th, 2024, I participated in a group volunteering project in Nepal: Empowering Vulnerable Communities through HumAid Volunteers. This project was coordinated by Ibo Italia and co-organized by VISIONEERS from Berlin, with Volunteers Initiative Nepal (VIN) as the hosting organization. Our team consisted of 10 volunteers from Europe (Italy, Poland, Spain, Belgium, Romania, and Turkey) and three volunteers from Nepal. Together, we focused on strengthening local communities and advocating for children’s rights by establishing youth clubs in schools and teaching essential life skills.
Living and Working as a Community
The volunteers and local staff lived together in a building that also served as an education and cultural center for the local community. The facility featured meeting rooms, a library, and a computer lab, which were used for various community activities. Living under one roof fostered a strong sense of teamwork and camaraderie. We shared responsibilities like preparing meals, and we bonded over activities such as exercising, playing board games, and watching movies.
One of my favorite memories was learning to dance Bachata, thanks to one of the volunteers who regularly organized dance lessons. It was an unexpected and delightful skill to take home with me.
Empowering Children Through School Clubs
A major focus of the project was establishing children’s clubs in six schools in the Okhaldhunga District. Our team divided into three groups, each working with two schools. These clubs provided a platform for children to voice their opinions, learn new skills, and gain awareness of their rights.
We conducted workshops to teach essential life skills such as communication, teamwork, leadership, and event management. The clubs became a safe space for children to express themselves, collaborate on meaningful projects, and develop their confidence. Watching their enthusiasm, especially as they took on leadership roles, was incredibly rewarding and reaffirmed the importance of our efforts.
Exploring Nepal’s Culture and Natural Beauty
During our free time, we explored the surrounding areas and immersed ourselves in Nepal’s stunning landscapes and rich culture. A highlight was trekking to the Annapurna Base Camp, where the breathtaking views of the Himalayas and majestic eight-thousanders left a lasting impression.
Life in Nepal had a slower rhythm compared to Europe, encouraging us to live in the moment and connect deeply with nature. We participated in local festivals like Dashain and Teej and were warmly invited to family celebrations. These experiences allowed us to gain a profound appreciation for Nepal’s customs and the incredible hospitality of its people.
Reflections on a Transformative Experience
Volunteering in Nepal was a journey of growth and discovery. It challenged me personally, interpersonally, and professionally, helping me build resilience, adaptability, and teamwork skills. I gained a deeper understanding of cultural diversity and the power of community development.
The relationships I formed with my fellow volunteers and the local community, combined with the new skills and insights I acquired, have left an indelible mark on my life. This experience strengthened my passion for education and personal development, leaving me with unforgettable memories and a broader perspective on life.
Conclusion
Volunteering in Nepal was truly transformative. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity and will always cherish the bonds, skills, and lessons it gave me. Nepal will forever hold a special place in my heart.
